Sept. 6: Rodeo Parade

Rodeo Parade!

Sept. 6: To give you a little background: The rodeo and the rodeo parade, needless to say, are HUGE deals around here. The amount of revenue generated for our town is unbelievable. Thousands of people come here to camp at the rodeo, participate in the rodeo, and watch the rodeo. The parade on Saturday morning lasts a couple of hours and is about 2 miles long for those marching in it. We have 6 bands, the fair queens, many families, businesses, and organizations, and usually around 2000 horses at the end of it. Yes, 2000, that was not a typo! We are trying to get the boys involved in as many new experiences as possible, and we are lucky this one is in our back yard!

Alex & Jer sitting waiting for the parade to start. They enjoyed the popcorn! Alex says they have popcorn in Nigeria, but it is always sweet with sugar like our kettle corn. That was surprising to us, because when Ndeenga was here (from Tanzania) she said that our food was so sweet in general. The boys both said that they have parades in their countries, but they are military parades. They had never seen anything quite like our rodeo parade before! They absolutely loved the floats that threw candy out. It was fun watching them get so excited about a few Frooties and Smarties. They truly had a blast gathering up all the different kinds, most of which they had not seen before. They also got some other goodies, including Hardee's coupons, frizbees, beads, and multitudinous flyers!

Flags of parade sponsors.

Iowa's Governor- Terry Branstad
The boys were very excited to see him walking in the parade!

One of many silly floats in the parade. The boys laughed and laughed :)

Fort Madison High School Marching Band
I'm pretty sure Jamo's in there somewhere!

They LOVED this one!

We had to include this since the twins' Girl Scout troop is in here!

More silliness

The beginning of the horses.

Our church puts on a rodeo luncheon as a fundraiser. The boys put in 2 more service hours cleaning trays and wiping tables. Yay! Can you spot them?
